Bob DeMore
Onondaga County Legislator
Biography

For the past 14 years, I’ve enjoyed my position as Town Supervisor for the Town of Fabius.  During those years, I’ve strived to work hard for our community and to take advantage of any additional benefits that I could bring to Fabius.  For example, early on I initiated the process to acquire for the Town of Fabius a 2-acre parcel with approximately 900 feet of lake frontage on Deruyter Reservoir.  We acquired the parcel from New York State for a nominal amount.  We currently use it for our children’s swim program, and we are looking at expanding it as a swimming facility for our residents.

I have also been successful in acquiring funds for a salt barn facility for Fabius, our town community center, and lights for the Fabius-Pompey soccer field.  I’m especially proud of that project which allowed the students of Fabius-Pompey to play at night.   As a result, many of the parents who work during the day were able for the first time to enjoy participating in their child's athletic program.

For the last 5 years, I’ve been the president of the Onondaga County Supervisors Assn., and as a result have become more involved in projects and issues which have a county-wide impact. What I’ve observed in that process isthat when towns and villages work together, cost savings can be achieved which benefit our residents. For example, the Town of Fabius shares an ambulance service with 4 or 5 towns and villages in Cortland, Madison and Onondaga Counties.  As a result, Fabius pays approximately $24,000 a year for ambulance service; if Fabius were to go alone, no doubt that bill would be in excess of $250,000.

With the increasing pressure to reduce the taxes that our residents pay and with little anticipated help coming from Albany (also the source of much of our real property tax problems), it’s obvious that the burden of reducing taxes falls on the county, city, town and village governments. The Supervisors Assn., through a grant that I acquired from the State, now has an intern in place to promote shared services with the idea that if we can reduce our tax burdenwe’ll make Onondaga County a more attractive location for businesses to relocate.

Over the past 20 to 30 years, we’ve seen the population in Onondaga County and Central New York either stagnate or decrease. My own family first came to Onondaga County in the 1850’s, and between my siblings and our families of approximately 35 individuals, only 7 are left in Onondaga County. The rest have moved away, mostly to the South, for the most part to seek better employment opportunities. This downward trend needs to be stopped.

I grew up in the Strathmore Section of Syracuse before moving to Fabius in 1974.  After graduating from Niagara University and Syracuse University College of Law, I worked as a law clerk for Family Court Judge Raymond Barth for two years before entering private practice.  I've been a partner in the law firm of Perrin & DeMore, PC, since 1978 with offices in LaFayette and Fabius.

From 1976 to 1982, I served as Fabius Town Justice; I then served as the Republican Chair for the Town of Fabius.  In 1986 I became Fabius Town Supervisor, and in 2001 I was elected president of the
County Supervisors Association where I continue to serve.

I have been married to the former Anne DeIulio since 1986, and we live in the Village of Fabius.  Along with our son, Mark (a 19-year old college student), we are lifelong Onondaga County residents.

Historical Preservation

Our Community Center was originally
the Freewill Baptist Church and was utilized as a Grange Hall during most of the 1900's.  This building, along with many other structures on Main Street in Fabius, is on the National Registry of Historic Buildings.

I initiated the process to obtain funding
for its renovation, and with the help
of others Fabius now has a Community Center with Town and Village Offices.
I plan to continue my efforts in
preserving historic structures in
my Legislative District.
